Hi friend,
There’s one thing living inside my noggin lately:
Writing.
In general, I think a lot about what “quality” writing looks like. What it does. What it’s trying to do. What it sounds like. What it feels like.
So how do I know when I’ve come across quality writing?
For me, it’s writing that’s colorful. It feels alive.
What does that mean?
It’s engrossing. It’s visceral. It has a pulse.
It propels me forward from one sentence to the next.
Whether it’s wonky, or serious and vulnerable, it doesn’t matter.
It has a zest. A zing. It’s that same shimmering sparkle that makes me fall in love with a film, a song, a moment, or any art.
Emily Dickinson’s thoughts on poetry sum it up perfectly.
That’s how I know.
It tears the top of my fucking head off.
Joy Generator
Did you know NPR has a “joy generator”?
My favorite is “Let’s Reminisce.”
It’s a soundscape to help you tap into nostalgia.
And they have other fun options, too!
All meant to boost your positive emotions. ✨
“Small doses of daily delight can shift our focus away from our worries and give more opportunity for joy to arise.”
If you’re in need of a little dose of joy, check it out below.
Slow Down
I’m sending you off this week with Alisa Amador’s Slow Down.
Why? Because it’s good for the soul.
And watching her perform it by a lake feels extra cozy. It’s perfect.
See for yourself.
That’s all for issue #16 of Sunday Candy!
Thanks for reading, friend.
Until next time,
Sandra
