What a nice and evocative rendition on what I would deem "The Seasons of Life". I think we should all have a garden or a physical place like that to watch those seasons go by. It first made me think of Fassbinder's The Merchant of Four Seasons, have you watched it? Probably his most straightforward sensitive movie, and my second favorite of his. Also, inevitably, of Ozu and Japanese people attention and attachment to seasons.
I recently talked to my Zen monk friend from Japan, who is very shaken by the effects of a devastating earthquake that just happened in the prefecture next his (Noto), and he was telling me how in his temple studies, the teacher said "Humans love creation and hate destruction. But without destruction, there is no creation". Loved that insight, so simple yet powerful. "Very Buddhist!", he also said haha.
And, this edition felt like such a... mature? delivery. I thought like, why doesn't she have like 1 million subscribers already? Loved all the angles and formats and news you shared, very orderly, informative and nice to look at :) Always happy to see Sunday Candy pop in my inbox!
Thank you for responding to my question directly! And for sharing your thoughts around the subject matter. I like hearing what this makes you think about.
Always with the themes around seasons; it is never ending! I love that, might have to name a collection of something "The Seasons of Life." And I AGREE with you!!! I like to think of it as my personal garden; I dream of actually having my own one day. But, I guess the more practical version for everyone is like, to just get a plant! Have you worked on your green thumb?
And no, I haven't seen that YET. But, I'm sure you can expect a monologue from me headed your way once I do. Ozu lives in my head rent-free at this point. I love that you brought him up again; I kinda forgot.
10/10, that line on creation/destruction resonates for me. Nature reinforces the beauty of that cycle for me quite concretely, but it's only in retrospect, I think. Hardly in the moment.
But perhaps, most things are like that, no?
Mature? I'll let you unpack that for me later lol But thank you!!! You might be the only one who feels that way about the 1 million subscribers as of right now; but happy to have you always reading and sharing your thoughts with me!
I just got a vision of you ten years from now. After learning about the meaning of a green thumb, you go down a research rabbit hole. You've become a gardener, a botanist, florist, etc. All the things. Plants, flowers, whatever. They're your life. You hire someone to make you a bookshelf (so fancy!) and gather only the finest books on plants. You even convince me to write one for you. It's hard work, but sure, I'll write my friend a book. You read it. Your thumb becomes green permanently. And then you become entirely green too. You become the garden.
I'm loving how the "eye candy" aspect of Sunday Candy draws me in. I like the way you're leaning more and more into the visual side of your publication.
Ha! "Eye candy" made me laugh -- also, can't believe that phrase didn't cross my mind when thinking about the visuals, but, it's perfect. Clever man, Rick. I appreciate your thoughts here always. Thank you for that! Means a lot.

Haha a plant is definitely a good start. I didn't know what "green thumb" meant, now I do thanks to you, and I will start working on that very soon...
Expecting that collection eagerly, as well as that monologue :) And I agree, hard to see in the moment how nature invites us to see the cycle.
Yes, very mature. Very.
