I don’t know who Regina Spektor is but she’s my new idol!! I love how she rolled with her mistake and got the crowd to help her out. That’s a great life lesson too: if you mess up and don’t know how to fix it, ask 👏 for 👏 help 👏

I’m really resonating with this:

“But I know most people actively avoid making mistakes, or rather, avoid being seen making them in their creative work.”

And this: “I think we miss out on how to live with a sense of play when we don’t move through the messy. And how insanely unrealistic is it to expect ourselves, or anyone, to never slip?”

I’m with you on this one! Let’s embrace mistakes and reach out for help when we need!!!

Ooh, that's surprising because of her NYC background. There's a good chance you've come across her music on shows/movies.

+1 to the ask for help lesson. The more important lesson probably.

That's beautiful. I wish to be just as glorious whenever I make mistakes, and to be as charming as entertaining as Regina in this essay.

...the perfection is in the imperfection...

If Regina Spektor can make mistakes and thrive from them, anyone can do it! Loved the layer you added to not only being ok with making mistakes, but embracing and leveraging them. It's empowering and will start looking into how I can actively use them like that. Or sublimate them? What a gem of a quote you uncovered for us.

Thank you for sharing such a unique anecdote that made you look up to the sky, sounds like messy magically moment indeed!

Sublimate, indeed! I think finding ways to leverage mistakes/imperfection is a helpful reframe. Makes it less scary to make them if you know that’s an option. (It’s always an available option)

'But in resisting mistakes and glorifying perfection, opportunities are lost.' As a recovering perfectionist I can say this hits the nail on the head, so many missed opportunities from clenching to an image of perfection. Waiting for things to be perfect is basically just waiting. Not wanting to make mistakes will keep you stuck where you are where embracing mistakes is growth. Loved this piece Sandra!

Yes! Basically just waiting and basically just fear. And waiting in fear is definitely not the space where empowerment and agency thrives. Thank you for stopping by, Rik!

“And so, mistakes can sometimes be special. Or at least, not completely awful. We, humans, are destined to make infinite mishaps. If we’re going to make them anyway, why not move through those moments with acceptance and playfulness the way she did?”

Love this!
