Handwritten letters are special. In college, my Mom would send them to me, and I always loved getting them (I still have most of them.) I live close enough to her now that letters aren't necessary, but any time she gets me a card for my birthday or any other occasion, she always writes a personal note inside. And it's still one of my favorite things.
Hey Sandra! I'm feeling really tender after reading this issue of Sunday Candy <3
First of all, your use of complementary colors is on point 🤌
Second, I love that this issue is so visual.
“…I knew I wasn’t just writing letters, I was sending my heart.”
I feel your heart pouring out in your love letter to hand written letters in all 3 sections. Each letter, each stroke of the pen, and each time you scribble a word out, it feels like you’re painting with words 😍
I haven't written a letter in so long, but I do love hand writing in blank celebration cards others. It brings me joy to break out a beautiful hand-pressed card I got from a small local shop, choose a pen with ink that matches the card, and hand write a personal message inside. It does feel like I’m sending my heart 💖 Do you give hand written letters for birthdays/celebrations?
Your poem on your favorite color is beautiful. I also love how you associate it with events and feelings. I want to try this exercise to discover my favorite color, I don’t know anymore!
The lines that resonated with me the most are: “It’s snuggled within the blankets of boisterous laughter” and “It’s in your sometimes I worry if you’ll be okay.” I see bursts of bright rainbow colors in the first line, and some waves of calming blues/greens/purples in the second.
Your ‘Questions Lately’ will be my next journal prompts. I’ve been sitting on questions 1 and 3 for a while. I’ve been thinking of doing a mass unsubscribe on my Substack, and this is a sign to pull the trigger 😬(Sunday Candy is not on my purge list haha)
Thank you for this edition of Sunday Candy <3333333333
PS: Looking forward to painting to this week’s playlist!
The funny thing about the purple and yellow is…I actually really didn’t want to use yellow. I wanted to use pink and purple, but the package of paper I ordered bamboozled me with green instead of pink. Thus, this color combination was born out of a constraint!
“Painting with words” oh I love that a lot. I think that’s exactly what writing is, especially poetry. And paintings are poetry too.
“…break out a beautiful hand-pressed card I got from a small local shop, choose a pen with ink that matches the card, and hand write a personal message inside.” I like that you match the ink with the card. And I’m not surprised you are that detailed about it! I feel like you probably have lots of heart in your cards! Have you ever considered painting a little something inside a card?
I actually really love writing letters to friends for birthdays, or at least, I used to. I stopped more recently, but it was one of my favorite ways to express my love and appreciation and wishes for people. There was always an emotional response that just isn’t provoked the same way with texts, a call, or even sometimes being in person. Reading what someone feels hits different. I always thought it was a good way of letting people know, "I'm happy you exist." But I also don’t think that kind of thing needs to be saved for big events/celebrations.
I would love to see what you come up with if you explore writing about color in relation to feelings and events! I think the colors you see for both of the things I wrote are spot-on too. Laughter = rainbows. Keep me posted on your color identity crisis. Maybe you were meant for all the colors! I think a fun thing to do would be to try that as a written exercise and doing a painting to complement it. Thoughts?
THRILLED to hear I’m not on your purge list, let’s keep it that way. That would break my lil tender heart. @_@
Thank you for your thoughtful comment and being a loyal reader!!
Sunday Candy is such a wonderful treat to unwrap and savor. Thank you for sending your heart out into the world. Thank you for your tenderness, dear Sandra
As for the musings about writing by hand, you're so right. I realized the only time I write by hand is once a year when I write a letter to my wife on her birthday. I used to do it more often and there's definitely power in it, will revive it by your suggestion (though I do wish my handwriting had such big personality as yours).
And damn, those questions! "What's in front of me that I'm not seeing?" got added to the top of the note I see everyday, plus the meta one about what questions are no longer serving me. But they're all great, and I again ask, how did you get so good at asking questions? Please make a CBC on it or at least pass me a bit of your secret sauce!
Dude, OF COURSE you like Animal Collective, really bringing me back to high school there. What a great song. Full nostalgia mode now. 🙈
And that’s so sweet of you! Why wait though? You should surprise her with a letter soon! She deserves it. Reading “big personality" made me laugh. I was tempted to redo all of the writing in every section because it’s not very neat, but it feels more human this way?
“got added to the top of the note I see everyday” You keep a note to look at everyday? Elaborate, Oscar!!
You have to be careful with throwing out that CBC idea publicly....people will start to think it’s going to happen Lol 😬
Ohh when they know about it I'm sure they'll hope it happens too! 🙌😉
About the letter, I just meant that I will be generally writing more by hand haha but yeah, she definitely deserves it! :)
Regarding the "note I see everyday" 😂😂 It's just my Google Keep to-do list, that has a few quotes (and now questions) at the beginning haha nothing elaborate.
So glad you didn't redo the writing, definitely feels human and again, a human with personality!
Not only was this delivery such a vibe the content just floored me. I was hypnotized by the cadence of your descriptions of your favorite color. I was pained with nostalgia at your notes on handwritten letters. Those questions are pierce to the center reflections.
Every edition is its own special confection. Thank you for treating us all to this Sandra!

That's an amazing story. Not sure how I'm just now seeing this.
Have you considered handwriting letters to your daughter? 🥹

"dear Sandra" 🥺
my lil heart is a flutter
Wow! Such a poetic issue. Fell in love with the color poem... unrelated but it inevitably made me think of one of my favorite Animal Collective's song, Bluish https://open.spotify.com/track/6tPoXU8ni7vcTdDYES1LdS?si=5ebd43cc010a4a9d

"One of my favs yet." !!!! Thank you
😌
I can't say I really know what that Sunday Candy personality is, but I'll take your word for it!!
Love the handwritten notes. I'm always excited when I see something other than bills in my mailbox.
As always, beautiful piece, Sandra.
“What’s in front of me that I’m not seeing?” Thank you for this reminder. This is a powerful question in so many ways.
I like your deep thoughts and aesthetics.
Keep sprinkling ♥️
