You captured this feeling so well! I just felt this watching Barbie (lol) with my girlfriends while we were on a trip together. On one hand, I did wonder if it was a waste to spend our time together watching a movie. But it made the whole experience come alive, and we had so much to talk about after. I kept the ticket too, to remember the moment. Which reminds me, love the Sunday Candy logo!

Oooof, you hit right in the nostalgia feeling here. This communal-yet-intimate experience is one of the things I value the most. I also have lots and lots of fond memories of going to the movies with friends and family, and would also save tickets (but have since threw away, I'll have to check). My first kiss with my now wife was at Babel, which holds a very special place in my mind.

Completely get the feeling and extremely pleased you wrote about it. Both the approximation and post-analysis, is something I treasure deeply. So great to hear you still do it, and so glad you bring it up, write about it and mostly, that you value it and do it mindfully like that.

Bring back the value of going to the movies with friends!

Also, I'm sure we'll go together to the movies one day :)

I love your perspective on going to the movies with friends. I never thought of the vulnerability aspect of it either. I used to go to the movies all the time with my best friend in high school, and looking back on that time, she was the ONLY one I’d go see movies with. I’d grab her arm if I got scared lol we’d always go to Johnny Rockets after for burgers and fries after. Even though we’d see lots of action movies most people would think are a waste of time, it definitely strengthened our relationship. Watching action movies was like going on an adventure together.

“Between the busyness of life, the convenience of streaming services and everyone being a quick text, DM, comment, and Zoom call away, it feels rare choosing to simply sit beside a friend in silence to enjoy a film for a couple of hours. I think it’s sacred.” Yes, totally this. I haven’t thought about it like this. You’re trapped in a dark room with another person for several hours, forcing yourselves to sit in front of a screen and watch what’s playing. It’s so true, it is sacred!

“And I love how the silence between us in the theater turns to lively chats during our walk to the car and post-movie drives.” Ooof yes.

And I also just love this line: “Endless memories punctuated by movie trailers and closing credits.”

Awww yes! I feel this Barbieheimer situation is really bringing back the movie theater experience. I think Steven Spielberg also predicted a few years ago that watching movies in theaters will turn into more of a broadway experience--longer showings, more of a special occasion treat.

I highly endorse watching Joy Ride, recently went to the movie theater for it and it was HILARIOUS.
